FAQ

  • Where do I put my trash bag afterwards? Bring it back to the meetup location. The organizers will handle disposing of the bags.
  • Can we clean up some other blocks nearby? Yes!! Please do. The highlighted target area is just a guess at what we could cover, depending on how many people participate.
  • Can I bring my kids? Yes, please! These events have been popular with families. Your friendly event organizer has a 5yr old and a 7yr old … the older one was a baby when we started doing this!!
  • Can we do another one of these that covers (some other blocks)? Yes! Reach out to Chris (below) and I can help w planning & supplies & support.
  • When is the next event? We organize these events monthly on the 3rd Sunday, excluding the wettest/darkest months. (January cleanup is on a Monday due to MLK weekend.)
  • Are we prepared to handle sharps/needles at this event? Please do not touch any sharp or dangerous objects and instead report them to the city via the “find it, fix it” web site or app. For folks who are trained and comfortable with handling needles, we often have one or two sharps disposal containers on hand.
  • How should we interact with encampments? Please remember to be respectful of persons experiencing homelessness and to leave camps and personal property items in place. Be mindful of personal safety and do not clean within 20 feet of tents and encampments.
  • I have a suggestion on how this can be done better. Please reach out to Chris at the address below. I’m just a neighbor like y’all who is trying to be proactive about making a positive contribution to the community. I want to do this in a positive and effective way.

Be safe!
  • Assume cars don't see you. Stay out of the street.
  • Don't pick up dangerous, sharp or heavy items. Use the Find-It-Fix-It app to report needles on public property.
  • Sanitize your gripper afterwards, with a Lysol wipe, first on the handle and then second on the “business end”
  • Encampments: be respectful, stay 20 feet away, we aren’t touching their stuff.
  • Needles: don’t interact w needles unless you have the disposal kit and know what you’re doing
    • Same for other dangerous items

What area are we cleaning up?
  • We are aiming for a 2 or 3 block radius around our meet-wup spot, but if you have a bock or route that you travel often, I strongly encourage you to go there instead. It is very gratifying to see the results of your efforts afterwards!
  • The specific areas that we aim for…

Powell Barnett Park area: we have formally adopted the yellow streets as “Friends & Neighbors of Powell Barnett Park”.  The orange streets are just the next closest streets that get high traffic. Anything nearby is totally in play.
